Industry

Duration

2 months

I was invited to contribute to the development of Spendler, a voice-first AI-powered financial assistant aimed at younger audiences. This was a short-term project focused on helping the team shape their MVP. The concept behind Spendler was to reimagine personal finance management as something casual, effortless, and even entertaining — far removed from the typical dry financial apps cluttered with tables and graphs.

I was responsible for:
  • Creating the brand character for Spendler, giving the assistant a memorable, cheeky visual identity.

  • Designing the complete UI system and visual language for the product, including typography, color palette, iconography, and illustration style.

  • Developing a minimalistic, text-driven interface that prioritizes conversation over charts, making personal finance approachable and even fun.

  • Crafting voice interaction UI flows, ensuring seamless switching between voice and text commands.

  • Preparing branded assets for mobile and marketing use.

UX Solutions & Product Features

As part of this MVP project, I was responsible for designing a set of simple, voice-first interaction flows and UI solutions that reflect Spendler’s casual, sarcastic personality while keeping personal finance management effortless and approachable. Key features included:

  • Voice-Based Expense Tracking
Users could simply say what they spent, and Spendler would automatically categorize and log the expense. I developed conversational UX flows to make this process quick and natural, with witty confirmations and occasional sarcasm built into the responses.

  • Smart Reminders
Spendler detects upcoming payments like rent, gym memberships, or recurring bills, and even syncs with the user's calendar to remind them about birthdays or personal events that might require a gift or extra spending. I mapped out notification scenarios and reminder prompts to keep them helpful without being intrusive — unless, of course, the sarcasm called for it.

  • Receipt Scanning
Users could take a photo of a receipt, and Spendler would automatically recognize the total, assign a spending category, and create a record. I designed a lightweight, minimal UI for this feature to make scanning feel instant and casual, rather than like a form-filling chore.

  • Custom Voice Notifications
To give users more control (without menus or settings screens), Spendler supports voice-triggered notifications. I built UX flows for commands like “Warn me if my Starbucks budget goes wild” or “Remind me when I’m overspending.”

  • On-Demand Expense Summaries
Financial stats are delivered in plain text or as conversational summaries on request. Users can simply ask “How much have I spent on coffee this month?” and get a snarky, to-the-point reply. I designed flexible, text-based summary layouts and voice reply sequences to support this.

Project Vision

Spendler isn’t your typical dry financial planner. Instead, it's voice-first, letting young users talk to it like they would a buddy. Text input is available, but the real magic is in conversational, vocal interaction. Voice commands like “log $5 coffee” or “warn me if I spend too much on pizza” are front and center.

What sets Spendler apart:

  • Clean UX without tables or charts—just a witty back-and-forth.

  • AI-powered sarcasm: Spendler can be very sarcastic—think witty jabs, playful mockery, and unexpected humor.

  • Smart automation: it auto-categorizes expenses, reads your calendar to remind you of upcoming payments (like rent, gym, or mom’s birthday in two days), and even processes receipt photos to extract amounts and categories.

Conclusion

Spendler transforms budgeting from a chore into a playful, voice-driven dialogue. It automates expense logging, category assignment, smart reminders, and receipt scanning—all while speaking in a tone that’s refreshingly real and sometimes brutally honest.

This early-stage startup proves that budgeting doesn’t have to be boring or overwhelming. With Spendler, managing finances becomes enjoyable, efficient—and occasionally a little ruthless.
